Celebrating Cultural Day!

This week we celebrated Cultural Day in Room 1! The children were very excited to share a little bit about their culture. We also looked at pictures and listened to traditional rhythms  from each place. We are so lucky to have a multicultural classroom!

Firefighters Visit

Today we had very special visitors at our school. Firefighters came to speak to the children about getting firewise. They talked about what to do if there is a fire and how to prevent fires. They also talked about the importance of having a smoke alarm. Afterwards the children looked at the fire engine and the firefighters showed some of their tools. They were very interested and had a great time while learning important skills.

Making Pizza! Yum!

This week the children in Room 1 and 2 worked together to make pizza! Yum!

The children have been learning about fractions and making pizzas and cutting them into equal slices was a great way to practice what they are learning about.

We made four pizzas and we needed a total of 32 slices. In order to work out how many slices the pizzas had to be cut into the children got into four groups - one for each pizza. When each group had the equal number of 8 children they knew that each pizza had to be cut into 8 slices.

Making pizza was a great learning experience. The children really enjoyed making it, and of course eating it too !:)

Practicing our Speeches

The children in Room 1 have been doing a great job practicing their speeches in the classroom!

They have been focusing on using a clear and loud voice, pacing themselves appropriately and making eye contact with the audience.

This week the children are saying their speeches in the classroom and all the Sheridan semi-finalists will say them on Thursday at the library.

Remember to keep practicing your speeches at home too!

Learning about simple machines

The children in Room 1 have been investigating simple machines. After researching the different types of simple machines the children walked around the school to see what machines they could find.

Here are some of the machines that they found:

Lever

Pulley

Wheel and Axle

Inclined Plane

Wedge

Screw

After our research the children picked what type of simple machines they wanted to become experts in. They have now started building their own machines using different materials.

These are the simple machine experts in Room 1:

Inclined Plane: Victoria, Ronan.

Lever: Florence, Ananyaa, Lana.

Screw: Asher, Leo.

Pulley: Joshua, Jackson, Maisie.

Wheel and Axle: Jack, Benjamin, William.

Wedge: Siena, CJ, Sanuka.

We are looking forward to seeing what amazing machines the children will create!

Trip to the Sky Tower

The children in Room 1 had an amazing day today at the Sky Tower!

They were very excited and looking forward to finding out what they could see. They really enjoyed the view from the top of the tower and especially the glass floor that allowed them to see all the way down to the street!

They also learned about how the tower was made, how tall it is and the safe emergency area. As we are learning about simple machines we also discussed the machines that the builders would have used to build the Sky Tower.

We would like to say a special thank you to our parent helpers Nicola, Kirsty-Anne and Fadzie. Thank you very much for helping us today!
